The game is such a creative step forward in sandbox open world management. Glad to see these developers getting credit and financial return for their work.

One of the only games I ever bought through the greenlight program. Took them a little bit, but they definitely delivered,

Anomaly? No. Not at all. It's where Fantasy RPG scale should be today. 2023.The massiveness of Baldur's Gate 3 makes many teams feel handicapped. Even the Diablo team which is powered by one of the largest bank accounts in the games industry and cratered the online fantasy RPG market for more than a month now making hundreds of millions.Larian, stirs the waters of the RPG market.Creates larger expectations, from future productions, at a scale, younger gamers had not experienced before and older had forgotten. A market that wants us to get used to productions that want to gross hundreds of millions by spending just a few. Of cheaply repeating the same armors and game bosses and calling them with a different name while their games sell at the highest price range. A practice that is understandable by a team of 10 or 20 people. But not of one with billions in their pocket.I understand small and medium budgetteams feeling the need to defend themselves, (although they shouldn't they are doing honest and often fantastic work within their budgets) and they are right to want to manage expectations, I have worked for both small and large teams and I have helped both kinds of team. But the audacity of some of the largest ones to come out and defend their cheap practices, and fear of risk, is on another level. Well done Larian Studios. You made an AMAZING game. Thank you.

Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines 2 has changed developers. The game has gone from Hardsuit Labs to The Chinese Room. Interestingly, The Chinese Room wasn't brought into fix Hardsuit Labs' game, as much as to migrate it, re-envision, it, rework it, and rebuild it into a different game.-----PCGamer: "Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 has been quietly rebuilt by Dear Esther developer The Chinese Room with 'different gameplay mechanics and RPG systems'. The game's now slated for a fall 2024 release.""This certainly isn't what I expected. The troubledVampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2, which I'd just about given up on, is now set to release next fall, over four years after its initial intended launch. Paradox Interactive has tapped The Chinese Room, developer of Dear Esther and Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, as the studio to bring the fraught RPG across the finish line."Fraught" doesn't really begin to describe Bloodlines 2. The sequel to Troika's 2004 cult classic (and one of myvery favorite games) was initially supposed to come out in March 2020. Its first major delay came with the news that lead writer Brian Mitsoda (who also had a big hand in the original game) and creative director Ka'ai Cluneyhad been fired. Developer Hardsuit Labs was taken off the project entirely, and the game wasdelayed indefinitelyin 2021.The Chinese Room was brought in shortly after that, it's now been revealed. Ahead of today's news, I had the chance to talk to Paradox Interactive VP of World of Darkness (the broader setting of Vampire: The Masquerade) Sean Greaney, as well as Alex Skidmore, creative director of Bloodlines 2. After speaking to them, I remain uncomfortably in the dark about what happened to Hardsuit Labs' version of Bloodlines 2, but I came away excited for The Chinese Room's vision for Vampire: the Masquerade.I was initially surprised at the choice of developer—The Chinese Room has thus far been known for narrative and atmosphere-heavy, gameplay-lite projects—but the more I chewed on it, the more exciting the prospect became. One of Bloodlines 1's main appeals is its dense, textured, turn-of-the-millennium LA noir, and The Chinese Room has excelled at evoking a similar sense of place in its games. The Chinese Room has kept Bloodlines 2's initial planned setting of Seattle, and while Greaney noted that they "have been able to reuse a significant amount of art and level design" from Hardsuit's project, Skidmore was quick to clarify that The Chinese Room is using "a new code base with different gameplay mechanics and RPG systems." Bloodlines 2 is also still set at yuletide, but is now in the grips of a historic snowstorm, and Bloodlines 2's new trailer and concept art remind me of the OG Max Payne's grimy, modern NYC Ragnarök."(keep reading)PCGamer: https://lnkd.in/gZ-bUJwR#gameindustry #videogames #rpg #gamedev #reboot #vampire #worldofdarkness #paradox

''Tetris Reversed'? Alexey Pajitnov Shows Footage From Rediscovered Prototype for 'Tetris' Sequel: Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov and others spoke at the Game Developers Conference about Tetris Reversed, reports VentureBeat — and told the story of "a lost prototype of a Tetris game that was never published."But little did Pajitnov know that an engineer in charge of the game, Vedran Klanac, had kept a copy of it. Through the help of intermediaries, he showed it to Pajitnov and the two shared their memories of what happened to the lost game...Pajitnov has lived in the U.S. since 1991, where he has been involved in the development of games such as Pandora's Box and worked with companies such as Microsoft and WildSnake Software... Klanac is the CEO of Ocean Media, and he is originally from Zagreb, Croatia. He was an aerospace engineer who started his career in the games industry with Croteam where he built the physics engine for Serious Sam 2.Since 2006, he has been running Ocean Media, a game publishing company with a focus on consoles. During the last 20 years, he was involved in production as a programmer and executive producer in more than 200 projects. And it turns out he was the programmer who created the Tetris Reversed code based on instructions from Pajitnov, who had passed them on through a middleman. In 2011, programmer Vedran Klanac went to the NLGD Festival of Games in Utrecht, The Netherlands. He listened to a talk on a charitable effort from Martin de Ronde, a cofounder of game studio Guerrilla Games. Klanac said in an interview with GamesBeat that he listened to De Ronde's talk and offered to help. De Ronde came back months later saying he had an agreement with Pajitnov about creating a new prototype for a Tetris game.De Ronde asked if Klanac if he wanted to make Tetris Reversed by Pajitnov."Are you kidding me?" Klanac reacted. The idea is still to survive as long as you can, according to the article — but the entire playfield was accessible. "For the first time in public, they showed the video of the prototype in action," according to the article, which also records Pajitnov reaction. "When you see the gameplay video, and when you look at the design elements. This is Tetris for like 300 IQ people."No word on yet on whether the game will ever be officially published.Read more of this story at Slashdot.
